Giving to Students in Need

You may have seen our blog post about #GivingTuesday, which is a global invitation for everyone to give back to their communities in one way or another. In terms of Future Institute, you can give back by giving a college student a future in the following ways:

  • Become a mentor
  • Give a scholarship
  • Give an internship opportunity
  • Give a job opportunity

Perhaps you’re wondering “What makes the college students whom Future Institute serves special? Why should I donate my time, advice, or money to any of these students?”

Future Institute’s mission is to support Concept high school graduates in their transition into college or a career with the programs we offer. For example, our mentoring and training programs promote college persistence and have the added reward of scholarship, which greatly helps our first generation college students invest in their future.

The Facts

The students we serve have the following demographics:

First generation college students who have a mentor are 10-15% more likely to advance to another year of college. Studies show that first generation college students (41% of black students and 61% of Hispanic students) are twice as likely to drop out before their sophomore year.

The Bottom Line

Unfortunately, our students have many factors driving against them with the rising price of a college degree in addition to the lack of support from their institutions and families. Providing your time as a mentor, an opportunity for an internship or job, or donating a scholarship can drastically improve our students’ chances of success.

Being a mentor gives our students direct support from professionals in their field as well as experience in their field of study. Even if you can sponsor one student for six months with $500 or one year with a scholarship of $1,000, any donation has a huge impact on their life and their college career.

What will you give to a student in need this November?
