Should You Transfer to a New School?

You couldn’t wait for Freshmen Move-in Day! You bought your university’s gear and left any memories of high school back home. However, you found that you just don’t like the school you thought you would call home for the next four years. If you feel that transferring schools is the move for you, read on!

YOU CHANGED YOUR MAJOR AND STILL HATE GOING TO CLASS

You went from biology to business administration and still dread going to class everyday. While changing your major may be the key to curing your misery, it’s possible you’re not enjoying your classes because you don’t feel that you fit in at school. Or, the school doesn’t offer the major you want to pursue! If this is the problem, it’s possibly time to look at other schools.

SCHOOL IS TOO FAR FROM HOME (OR TOO CLOSE)

Sometimes, the location of your school may impact your mood. Maybe you grew up in the city and decided to go to school five hours away in the middle of nowhere. Now, you realize you need to be a little closer to home, or, at least in a city again. Or, maybe you’re tired of being close to home and want to get farther away. If school doesn’t feel like a second home to you, maybe it’s time to transfer?

YOU’RE NOT CONNECTING WITH YOUR PROFESSORS OR OTHER STUDENTS

You’ve taken gen eds and classes in your major and you haven’t been able to connect with any of the professors or students at your school. It’s important to connect with professors in your major because they can help you find internship opportunities, write recommendations for you, and connect you with people in careers you’re interested in. If you don’t feel like this is possible at your current school, the culture of the school just might not be for you.

THE TUITION IS TOO HIGH

You might have gotten into your dream school but, with all the loans you’re taking out and the hours you have to work to pay tuition, it might be time to look into schools that you can afford. You might find that going to a school that you can afford allows you to get a better college experience in that you can spend more time participating in student organizations and taking advantage of the opportunities college has to offer.

There is nothing wrong with transferring schools. Remember, college is a small part of your life but it’s also one of the most memorable times. If you feel like your experience would be better at a different school, don’t be afraid to apply there!
