Industrial & Organizational Psychology

Unless you’re in the psychology field, you may not have heard about Industrial and Organization Psychology or I-O Psychology for short. According to the American Psychological Association, Industrial and Organizational Psychology is “characterized by the scientific study of human behavior in organizations and the work place,” and “focuses on deriving principles of individual, group and organizational behavior and applying this knowledge to the solution of problems at work.”

The study of I-O psychology originated in the United States in the early 20th century and went on to grow after the World Wars. In present day, the study of I-O continues to grow increasingly more demanded leading to an increased professional value, especially due to the gravitation to remote working conditions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Founded in 1982, the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology is an independent organization that is also an organizational affiliate of the APA. In an effort to expand I-O’s exposure to students and educators, the Bridge Builders committee for SIOP has piled a vast list of resources for those interested in learning about the practice.

If any of this sounds interesting to you, you could consider taking some classes in I-O Psychology or even declaring a major!
