How to Handle Job Rejection

An unfortunate part of the job application process is rejection. In fact, rejection is common during the job application process. A survey by Randstand USA found that “the average length of a job search is five months.” An overwhelming majority of job-seekers found the search process stressful. After all, a lot goes into the “perfect job.” The position, the work environment, the benefits, the salary. However, experts have suggested ways to deal with the stress of rejection.

DON’T GET ATTACHED TO A POSITION

You might think you’re going to land your dream job and then you find out that you got rejected. In your feelings of despair, you may start doubting yourself. Not getting too attached to a job will make it easier to move on in search of a new job.

REJECTION IS NOT YOUR FAULT

You could be perfect during your interview but still get rejected. Don’t feel at fault if this happens. Instead, keep practicing interview questions and developing sought after skills.

ASK FOR FEEDBACK

While it may be hard, try to calmly ask the employer for feedback after getting rejected. Don’t try to beg for a job though. Ask the employer what you can improve on in future interviews. Additionally, make sure to thank the employer and be respectful of his or her time.

REAPPLY AT A COMPANY

According to Biron Clark, the founder of Career Sidekick, you can reply at a job after three to six months. So, if there was a company you really liked and that you saw some potential in, don’t be afraid to reapply. Who knows, maybe second times the charm?

Overall, while the search is arduous, it will be rewarding. In the hectic world of job hunting, don’t be afraid to take a day off during the search. Being rejuvenated will help you refocus your mind and continue applying for those jobs.  Happy hunting!
