The real test of a high school education is how it plays out afterward. CAN graduates are successful, hardworking, and are making contributions in diverse fields. Here are just a few of the many paths taken by Concept Alumni.

Da'Marcus Reese

Da'Marcus Reese is an Alumni of Horizon Science Academy Dayton High School, Class of 2014.

Briefly, describe your career path.
After graduating from Horizon Science Academy, the following year I studied for the military asvab test and took the main test a couple of times. I also was in search for a job while going through the process, and my school mentor, Mr.Toprak, had told me that the school was in need of a librarian. So now I work within the high school I went to as a staff member helping students with picking books for English class.
What are you passionate about in your work/school?
I am more passionate about working with students who are in the classes I was once in. The majority of the students are surprised in the school having a library and having me as their librarian.
Where is your career heading?
At the time I’m waiting on the Category 4 army program to open up as I work here and if the program does I want to be a criminal investigation special agent. I am also working on attainting my driver’s license so I can become a police officer or a sheriff as a second option in my career path. As I grew up I always wanted to be in the field of criminal justice and it has been the path I pursued.
How has your Concept Schools experience helped shape your success?
Once I did graduate and chose to join the army I came back to Horizon for tutoring with Mr. Toprak every Saturday. Each time my score improved, even though I didn’t reach the goal that was given. Mr. Toprak has helped me in a major way in achieving my goal to increase my score.
How are you making a positive impact in your community?
At Horizon I work with the students I know and the newer students with picking books and setting a positive environment in the library. That way when the students do come to check out books they feel like the library is a cool place to be and want to read more.
What is the most amazing or interesting thing that’s happened to you since graduating?
The most amazing thing that happened was getting a job here. All last year I was in search of a job. I never expected to work here a year after graduating, meeting people from different professional fields that are interested in our school. The first thing they see is the new attachment to the school and that’s me, the librarian. I have to represent myself and the school as a professional, and that makes me feel good that I’m a part of a community I know best.
Your favorite high school memory?
My favorite high school memory is the day I worked with my brother and his classmates with robotics club. We later went to a contest with another supervisor and competed against other schools. We didn’t win big but we were rewarded for our teamwork and character.
How do you support and participate in the Concept Alumni?
By being a positive role model toward students and representing Horizon in a professional way so other people can see us as a positive image for schools in my community.
